The Upper Hand Is Better Than the Lower Hand

✓ Sahih
Sahih al-Bukhari · 1427·Narrated by Hakim ibn Hizam (RA)

Transliteration

Al-yadul-'ulya khayrun minal-yadis-sufla, wabda' biman ta'ul, wa khayrus-sadaqati 'an zahri ghina, wa man yasta'fif yu'iffahullah, wa man yastaghni yughnihillah

Translation

Narrated Hakim ibn Hizam (RA): The Prophet (SAW) said, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand. Begin with those you support. The best charity is that given out of surplus. Whoever seeks to refrain [from asking], Allah will make him chaste, and whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient."

Practice This Today

Start your giving at home — support your dependants generously — and strive to be a giver rather than one who asks.
