A Third for Food, a Third for Drink, a Third for Breath

✓ Sahih
Sunan al-Tirmidhi · 2380·Narrated by Al-Miqdam ibn Ma'dikarib (RA)

Transliteration

Ma mala'a adamiyyun wi'a'an sharran min batn, bihasbibni adama ukulatun yuqimna sulbah, fa-in kana la mahalata fathuluthun lita'amih, wa thuluthun lisharabih, wa thuluthun linafasih

Translation

Narrated Al-Miqdam ibn Ma'dikarib (RA): I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) say, "No human fills a vessel worse than his stomach. A few morsels that keep his back straight are enough for the son of Adam. If he must eat more, then a third for his food, a third for his drink and a third for his breath."

Practice This Today

At your next meal, stop before you're full — leave a third for drink and a third for breath. Feel the lightness of the Sunnah.
